I’m really excited. When
I was a missionary in Trinidad I had a regular radio program on which
I discussed theology and current events from a biblical worldview. Many
people reported how helpful it was to them. We’ll soon be able
to do something similar from MIA through iTunes and podcasting.
I’ll be getting training
today on how to record and upload video and audio into iTunes, which
can be accessed and linked from our web page. We’ll soon have
a regular “broadcast” on the internet where I will share
thoughts about Scripture and life, interviews with our missionaries
and provide other news and resources helpful to our supporters. So stay
tuned!
My administrative assistant and I have been working on our spring newsletter
so that should be out next week. The newsletter is also here on our
web site.

One of MIA’s strengths for
many years has been the practical help we’ve provided churches
through Project Ebenezer. MIA-led short term mission teams have made
significant contributions to local church ministries through, among
other things, evangelism, Vacation Bible Schools, medical care, and
construction projects. We are in the process now of renovating Project
Ebenezer into a more holistic approach to community transformation that
will address the spiritual, health, education and economic needs of
communities in a more systematic way.
To accomplish this, the Board of
MIA has called two new missionaries to lead this effort. Gustavo Formenti
will join us this summer as our Director of Community Transformation.
He will be assisted by Al Gemman who will join us as our short-term
team coordinator as soon as he raises his support. We’re very
excited about the direction MIA is planning in community transformation
and the potential for life changing ministry.
But we’re not standing still
while waiting for Gustavo and Al to join our team. We are still sending
teams to do crucially needed work now. A major project is about to get
underway to build permanent housing in Haiti for some of the more than
600,000 left homeless by the January earthquake. We are also putting
together VBS, evangelism and sports outreach teams for all of the countries
where we have a presence.
Barry Smith, our Director of Theological
Education, is helping to coordinate these efforts until Gustavo and
Al arrive. If you or your church would like to join us in one of our
projects click to email Barry at

A wise sheep farmer is careful
about who he entrusts his sheep to. He doesn’t let just anyone
be a shepherd for his sheep. A wise farmer makes sure that his shepherds
are trained to nurture, feed, care for, and even love his sheep. How
much more so do the sheep in God’s flock need well-prepared shepherds.
Ministries in Action works in countries
where opportunities for Christian leaders to be trained to lead well
are rare or non-existent. It is difficult or impossible for most leaders
to travel to the United States for training. It is MIA’s goal
to take quality theological education (TE) to the people who need it.
Two of the places where we have
successful TE programs are Grenada and St. Vincent. The Theological
Institute of St. Vincent was started by MIA missionary John Lewis and
is now led by MIA Missionary Paul Duncan. Two years ago John moved to
Grenada and founded the Theological Institute of Grenada.
Between the two schools we have
about 100 students enrolled in degree programs. About 50 of them are
preparing to graduate and take up responsibilities serving in churches.
Please pray for them.
We have been blessed to have some
top professors from US schools teach for us. These include Terry Powell
from Columbia International University and James Hurley from Reformed
Theological Seminary. Please thank God for the service of these and
other godly teachers.
Director of Theological Education
Barry Smith is working on plans to build on the good work that has been
done in St Vincent, Grenada and other places to expand and improve our
theological education program. Please pray for God’s leading and
wisdom as we move forward.

I was in Haiti the week of March
28th. I went with our Haitian Ministry Director Bresile St. Germain
and Dr. Jay Sklar from Covenant Seminary. We spoke to 40 pastors at
a three-day conference on the topic of the goodness of God in the midst
of suffering. They were very encouraged by the reminders of the how
good and faithful God is.
It was great to be with these men
who every day are ministering to thousands still reeling from the January
earthquake. They had so many wonderful stories of the ways they have
seen God at work in the midst of truly horrendous circumstances. They
encouraged me at least as much as we encouraged them.
At the same time that Bresile,
Jay and I were speaking at the pastors’ conference we had a medical
team with 19 people in Port-au-Prince. Our team, led by our Medical
Missions Director, Kathryn Stephens, treated about 700 people.
In Haiti physical needs of the
people continue to be dire. We were able to carry with us tents for
temporary housing and cash to purchase food for 15 feeding stations.
Thank you to all who have donated to our relief work in Haiti. It has
made a real difference. But even more critical than the Haitians' physical
needs is their need for the gospel. So while we continue to minister
to physical needs of people we are also beginning a new phase of spiritual
ministry as well.
MIA has for more thirty years worked
with pastors in Haiti to mentor them in the MIA Strategy for Church
Growth. Beginning this summer we will begin formal theological education
there to help prepare pastors and other church leaders. Director of
Theological Education Barry Smith will be working El Shaddai Ministries
International and Miami International Seminary as we partner to offer
BA, MA and MDiv programs. Lord willing, I’ll be returning to Haiti
myself in June to teach a course on New Testament Greek to pastoral
students. Please keep us in your prayers!
