Disaster Relief

Overview

Ministries In Action has been working in the Caribbean for over 30 years.  In the process of fulfilling its mission to help the church to grow MIA has been able to build coalitions and establish partnerships with a large network of churches, church denominations, government officials, and other faith based organizations. For several years, we have successfully undertaken relief work following natural disasters.  MIA’s relief strategy is two fold:

Short Term

To meet as many immediate emergency needs as possible by sending shipments of food, water, linens, materials for temporary shelter and other essential supplies.

Long Term

To organize and send work teams from various denominations and groups throughout the U.S.A. and the Caribbean to participate in long term recovery needs such as counseling, community development, building homes, clinics, and places of worship.

Homes for the Homeless

Ministries In Action has developed a Homes for the Homeless program, which will rebuild homes for twenty families who lost essentially everything during the hurricanes.  This program has been successful in the Dominican Republic and Grenada.

Hurricane Dean 2007

On August 19, 2007 Hurricane Dean, then a strong Category Four storm, passed just south of the Island of Jamaica leaving pockets of destruction in its wake. While Jamaica did not experience the wide spread damage caused by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, many areas in the southeastern portion of the island experienced localized destruction of the same extent.

Ministries In Action has been endorsed by the Consulate General of Jamaica at Miami as an authorized relief agency to deliver assistance to the needy in Jamaica in the aftermath of Hurricane Dean.

After carefully assessing the situation, MIA has decided that the best way they can help with the recovery effort is by collecting donations to purchase building materials and sending skilled workers into the affected areas in Jamaica to assist with the rebuilding. MIA is seeking to raise $150,000 to purchase the materials necessary to rebuild and repair damaged roofs and edifices of homes, schools and churches. MIA is also requesting that carpenters and other skilled workers that are willing to donate their time and travel to Jamaica to assist with the rebuilding effort to contact their ministry office in Miami, FL at (305) 234-7855 .

Hurricane Ivan 2004

The 2004 hurricane season was devastating and there is an unprecedented need for immediate help and long term support. For many of our Caribbean neighbors an organization like Ministries In Action (MIA) will be one of their primary, if not their only, source of relief for both their physical and spiritual needs.

MIA is well positioned with long term contacts in some of the hardest hit countries; Haiti, Cayman Islands, The Bahamas, Jamaica, Dominican Republic and Grenada. Ministries In Action is already responding to the needs of our friends in the Caribbean. MIA President, Dr. E. Walford Thompson, after making several visits to some of the hardest hit islands said,

“The need is great, but our God is greater; and I believe that we can turn this hurricane tragedy into triumph, but the Body of Christ His Church must help.”
